1939 Varsity Football Team
Head Coach George Hobbs

The 1939 Moors Varsity Football Team finished 10-0 and won a CIF Championship. They were led by Quarterback John Petrovich who was named the CIF Southern Section Player of the Year.

The Moors had eight blowout victories that year with only two close games, including their 26-18 win over Santa Barbara in the CIF Championship Final at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

The Moors averaged 36 points a game while holding their opponents to 10 points a game. Notable players on the team were John Petrovich (AHS HOF Inductee & CIF–SS Player of the Year)

Chuck McFate (AHS HOF Inductee)
Alex Morrison (AHS HOF Inductee)
Tharen Hodges (All CIF)
Bill Hansen (All CIF)
Ward Friedman (All CIF)

As far as we know none of the players on that team are alive today. Alex Morrison was a member of the HOF Committee for many years and was inducted into the AHS HOF in 2019 after passing away earlier that year at the age of 95.
